Many films have been shot in the Megalong Valley going back as far
as 1921 with ‘Rudds New Selection’ and ‘the Blue Mountains
Mystery’ followed by ‘When the Kellys Rode’. ‘Sons of Matthew’
followed which was shot in various locations ranging from Queensland to
Bondi to Megalong in 1949
When the Kellys Rode
- 1934 When The
Kellys Rode (1934) - This was the English film maker, Harry
Southwell's third Kelly film and the first film about the Kellys with
sound. It was forbidden from being exhibited in NSW for more
than ten years under the ban on bushranging films.
With its close proximity to Sydney Megalong Valley has
continued to inspire cinematographers: The series, ‘Ben Hall’ (1975),
and ‘Luke’s Kingdom’ (1976); feature films such as ‘Ride on Stranger’
(1979), ‘Dangerous Summer’ (1982) and most famously ‘Mad Max III’
(1985). A tale of convict days, ‘Comrade’ followed and ‘Grievous Bodily
Harm’ starring Colin Friels and John Waters was released in 1988.
More recent films include‘In the Winter Dark’ (1998) and ‘Stealth’

is a 1921 Australian silent directed by Raymond Longford based on
the Dad and Dave stories by Steel Rudd It is a sequel to
on our Selection ( 1920).
The Blue Mountains Mystery is a lost 1921 Australian

Sons of Matthew is a 1949 Australian film directed by
Charles Chauvel. The film was shot in 1947 on location in
Queensland, Australia and the studio sequences in Sydney. Sons
of Matthew took 1.5 years to complete, but it was a great success
with Australian audiences when it finally opened in December 1949. The
story of five brothers who homestead, with other settlers, on the virgin
plateaus of the Australian bush country.

set in the 1930s have been made into television mini-series.
