The Love of the Races
Outside of Sydney, bush race meetings were popular, and the inn, hotels or taverns were important centres of social life.

Horse racing was one of the earliest forms of entertainment for the district's pioneer settlers; race meetings and amateur picnic races.

It was an event  for everyone.  People came from miles around and stalls were set up.

Governor Macquarie agreed to the first horse racing carnival being held at Hyde Park in 1810, and the races quickly became popular social occasions. Jorrocks was one of the 19th century’s most famous racehorses, his plucky career endearing him to the colonial press.
